Lyn’s Message: PSP Extension

by | Oct 2, 2020 | News, Union Business

If you have not yet watched Gary Kelly’s urgent video message posted today, October 1, 2020, on SWALife this afternoon, I encourage you to do so. I echo Gary Kelly’s comments that this is a sad day for the airline industry as the Payroll Support Program, or PSP, ended yesterday. Thousands of Flight Attendants at other carriers are losing their jobs today. Our love and support is with them.

The PSP kept the aviation industry flying without furloughs and concessions during the pandemic. TWU International and TWU Local 556 joined with other aviation unions in demanding that our elected officials authorize an extension of the program for an additional six months to aid Southwest and other carriers.  The time for them to act is now. I urge you to reach out to your elected officials now, too.

Since the onset of this crisis, TWU Local 556 has sought to work with the Company to find ways to avoid furloughs, salary cuts, and benefit reductions. That has not changed today; concessions may not be the answer, and historically, have not prevented furloughs.

Flight Attendants have done their part with over 32% electing to retire early or take an extended leave. These programs have saved money, and we hope the Company will be open to even more creative ways to prevent concessions and save jobs. Those Flight Attendants who have stayed have served bravely on the front lines of this pandemic, ensuring that customers want to return.

There has never been a more important time to be a part of a Union. We must stay together and stand united.

Lyn Montgomery

TWU Local 556 President
