Frequently Asked Questions

Vacation (201)

This FAQ resource partners with the Contract 201: Article 14 – Vacation created and published by the TWU Local 556 Education Committee.

Q1: “I have a trip that overlaps my vacation… but it has a SIP. Will Crew Scheduling leave the SIP’d portion of the trip on my screen like they do with overlap?”

Nope! If you have a trip that overlaps your vacation, it will be pulled in its entirety, regardless of a Schedule Interruption Point (SIP).

Q2: “If I really like the trips that I was awarded during a vacation month, can I choose to fly all or part of a pairing that would be pulled?”

Yes, if the pairing is not fully encompassed in your vacation week, you CAN choose to fly all or part of that pairing as outlined in Article 14.5.B and Article 14.5.C.2 and 3. To exercise this option, you would need to contact Inflight Crew Planning before the end of the Primary Bidding Protest Period (7th at Noon CT). If you do not contact Crew Planning by the end of the Protest Period, your schedule will be adjusted per Article 14.5.C.1.

Q3: “I picked up a trip over my vacation and am so sick!!! Are there any additional penalties for calling in sick over my vacation?”

There are no additional penalties for calling in sick during vacation. The sick call will be treated just like other times you report in too ill/injured to work as outlined in Article 32 of our Contract, including using your quarterly PIN or Doctor’s note to not accrue attendance points. Just keep in mind, you will not be paid out of your sick bank if you call in sick for a picked-up pairing that falls within your vacation slot.

NOTE: Certain state laws superseded our contractual language, and you will be paid out of your sick bank.

Q4: “I am new to Inflight and only have 3 days of accrued vacation. I was looking to trade my vacation with Open Time but there are only 7-day slots available. Am I just stuck with what I was awarded?”

No! Regardless of seniority, you have unlimited vacation trading per our CBA. Even though you only have three days of vacation, you can trade with any available 7-day slot (whether in Open Time or with a Flight Attendant) and it will automatically adjust your award to the first three days of that slot.

Keep In Mind: If you have 5 or fewer days of vacation, after you are awarded your line, you have the option of sliding your vacation so that it will begin on the first scheduled working day after any days off that may fall during your scheduled slot. (Article 14.5.A) In order to exercise this option, you must contact Inflight Crew Planning before the close of the Primary Bidding Protest Period (7th at Noon CT).

Q5: “What is the cutoff for trading my vacation?”

Vacation trades must be completed by the 1st day of the month prior to the month in which the vacation slot falls. (Article 14.2.C) For example: If I would like to trade my August Vacation, I would need to complete the trade no later than July 1st.

Keep in mind, there is no trading vacations between domiciles, and vacation slots for which a pairing has been pulled are not tradable.
