The TWU Local 556 Education Committee’s “Hot Topic” emails and Fast Fact Fridays tackle real-life Member questions pertinent and relevant to our Flight Attendant lives at this moment. This week’s most-asked questions of our Committee, the Grievance Team, and other Union representatives involved often referenced sections of our Contract – Article 8 (Hours of Service), Article 10.10 (Overlap), and Article 32.5 (Personal Illness Note). Let’s take a look at what other Flight Attendants are wondering… because you may be wondering about it too!

Fast Fact Friday

Hot Topics #3: Week of April 13-17, 2026

Our TWU Local 556 Education Committee answers many questions about a wide array of topics. Once a month, instead of focusing on a singular topic, our Fast Fact Friday will contain real Member questions. This month’s “Hot Topics” Fast Fact Friday will cover lots of different topics from multiple articles in our Contract, including: Article 8 (Official Clock), Article 10 (Overlap: Reserve to Lineholder and New Domicile), and Article 32 (PIN Black Out dates and Single Continuous Occurrence of Illness).

Question from a Member

Question: “I am on JPR. Do I need to answer or return a call from Crew Scheduling outside of my designated shift hours?”

Answer: When on Reserve, you are only liable to answer or return a call from Crew Scheduling when contacted during your designated contact/shift hours. On JPR, this means you are only required to answer or return a call between the hours of 1000 Local Time and 2200 Local Time. Outside your designated contact hours and during an overnight, you are not required to be available to Crew Scheduling.

Illegality Pulls

When a Flight Attendant adjusts their schedule to allow for a domicile break of less than eleven and one-half (11:30) hours, the required adjustments will depend on the length of the delay. (Article 8.6.B)

  • If the first pairing is one (1) hour or more late, they will be adjusted back to the original amount of time the Flight Attendant gave themselves between the two pairings. This adjustment will not result in a loss of pay.
Keep in Mind: Our rest period cannot be less than the FAR required ten (10) hours.
  • If the first pairing is less than one (1) hour late, no adjustment is needed.
Keep in Mind: Our domicile break is calculated from the end of the debrief for the first assignment to the check-in for the second assignment.

Owed Union Dues

If a Member owes Union dues outside of the normal monthly payroll deduction, you will need to submit a standalone payment. Unfortunately, Southwest Airlines cannot payroll-deduct for past-month’s outstanding dues. You can pay your past-due dues on the TWU Local 556 website.
