Contract 101

Article 10 – Scheduling/Bidding

Overlap

Overlap is simply when your current month’s schedule and the first trip of the next month cause a Contractual or FAR illegality.

This section of the Contract is important to understand as it affects most everyone and can be incredibly confusing. There are so many different overlap options depending on each individual case that the majority of phone calls to the Union Office at the beginning of each month are about this topic! Because there are so many variables, we will just go over the basics with our Contract 101: Article 10 – Overlap.

It is important to keep in mind these minimum requirements when figuring out your overlap:

  • Contractually you are guaranteed 48 hours off in a 7-day period (48/7). KEEP IN MIND: THE TIME OFF DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BETWEEN MONTHS.

  • You may waive your Contractual 48/7, but you CAN NOT go below the FAR mandated 24 hours off in a 7-day period (24/7) or 10 hours between trips. THIS TIME OFF DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BETWEEN BID PERIODS. An overnight scheduled for 24 hours or more will count for the FAR required 24/7 break.

OVERLAP ADJUSTMENT TIMELINE

Lineholder to Lineholder: Crew Scheduling will make all necessary adjustments to your schedule (“ghost out” trips) by noon Central time on the 18th of the current month. If a FA has the option to waive their 48/7 and fly a trip for premium pay (1.5), they have until noon Central time on the 19th to notify Crew Scheduling.

Lineholder to Reserve: All adjustments to keep you Contractually and FAR legal will be made by noon Central time on the 19th of the current bid month. You will have until the 24th of the current month to call Crew Scheduling and waive your Contractual legalities to protect the full Reserve Guarantee pay.

Reserve to Lineholder: Adjustments will not be made in the next month until you have been given an assignment in the current month.

Reserve to Reserve: All overlap adjustments will be made in the new Reserve month and will be made no later than noon Central time on the 19th of the current bid month. You will have until the 24th of the current month to call Crew Scheduling and waive your Contractual legalities to protect the full Reserve Guarantee pay.

Lineholder to Lineholder (Article 10.10.A)

Overlap from a bid line to bid line, VR line to bid line, or bid line to VR line will be adjusted to maintain either your Contractual or FAR legalities (depending on whether your trips were on originally awarded days).

This FA’s August pairing was original (pink “O” designation). Because they did not have the contractual 48 hours off within a 7-day period, they had the option to have their LAX SLC pairing pulled (without pay) or fly it for 1.5x.

If this FA had wanted to trade the pairing in August with another 3-day starting on the same days, their overlap protections would be in place like it was an original trip! (Article 10.10.G)

If the pairing in the new bid month (September) had paid more than the pairing in the current bid month (August), the FA could have chosen to fly that trip and have the August pairing pulled without pay by calling Crew Scheduling no later than the 19th of August.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the September pairing had a SIP which could be used to make the FA contractually legal to work both pairings, Crew Scheduling could make the overlap adjustment at the SIP as long as what is left on their screen pays at least 4.0 TFP.

Lineholder to Reserve (Article 10.10.B)

Overlap adjustments between the Lineholder month to Reserve will be made to keep you Contractual (48/7) or FAR (24/7) legal and may not happen between months.

Because this 3-day from March overlaps into their scheduled JAR days on 2-3, the straight-time TFP associated with the flying on those days will count towards their Monthly Reserve Guarantee for March. When this FA returns to domicile on the 3rd, they’ll need to call Crew Scheduling for additional flying (which can include another RON) or to be released for a domicile break (11:30 hours end of debrief to liable for contact/check-in).

Reserve to Lineholder (Article 10.10.C)

Overlap adjustments between Reserve to Lineholder will be made to keep you Contractual (48/7) or FAR (24/7) legal and may not be between months.

Because this Reserve assignment carried into original scheduled days off in their Lineholder month, the flying on March 2 (first day of the third bid period) will be paid at 1.5x. If this FA had been awarded a line resulting in an overlap pull on March 2, the premium would not apply.

FYI: “B2” on the last day of the bid month (March 1) means that this is technically a 3-day Reserve block and could result in an assignment carrying into the new bid month.

Reserve to Reserve (Article 10.10.D)

Overlap adjustments between Reserve to Reserve will be made to keep you Contractual (48/7) or FAR (24/7) legal and may not be between months. All Reserve to Reserve Overlap pulls will be adjusted to no more than five (5) reserve days.

NOTE: March 1 is the last day of the second bid month (“February”).

Because both of these blocks have the same designation, on the March 1 Reserve Report as good for up to a 4-day assignment. They were given this 3-day assignment and will be considered an inbound Reserve on the 3rd. When they get back to domicile, this FA needs to call Crew Scheduling to either be given additional flying (which can include another RON) or be released for a legal domicile break (11:30 hours from end of debrief to liable for contact/check-in).

FYI: The pink “K” designation means both the JPR and JAR blocks are originally awarded Reserve blocks. This means they are automatically combinable by Crew Scheduling for up to a 4-day assignment.
