Stacking Pairings

Q1: “I’m a commuter and like to maximize my pay when I come to work. Is there a way to work more than one pairing in the same domicile day?”

There is! Our Contract states that a Flight Attendant can work more than one assignment in the same domicile day as long as the combined duty day does not exceed the scheduled FAR maximum duty day (14 hours from check-in to end of debrief) and there is at least two (2) hours scheduled between block-in to block-out of the two pairings.

NOTE: A Flight Attendant can exceed the FAR maximum scheduled duty day (14 hours) if they are only scheduled to deadhead after 13:30 hours. (Article 8.2.A.1.f)

Q2: “How do I calculate the required time in between the two pairings? How do I calculate the total duty day?”

  • The required two (2) hours between the two pairings is calculated from block-in of the first pairing to block out of the second pairing.

  • The total FAR duty day is calculated from check-in/report of the first pairing to the end of debrief of the last pairing.

Q3: “After I finish the first pairing, do I have to check-in for the second pairing? Or am I already checked in because I worked that same day?”

If the pairings do not originate on the same domicile day, you will need to check-in at/before the required check-in time for both pairings.

If both pairings originate on the same domicile day, it will depend on how long you have scheduled between check-in of the first pairing to scheduled check-in of the second pairing.

  • If the pairings are within six (6) hours, you will automatically be checked in for the second pairing.

  • If the pairings check in more than six (6) hours, you will need to check-in again. (Article 8.2.A.1.f and Contract Q&As #8.12)

NOTE: If you are automatically checked in for the second assignment but don’t want to be, you can call Crew Scheduling and have them uncheck you in. This means that you will be required to check-in at or before the scheduled check-in time associated with the second pairing. (Article 8.2.A.1.f and Contract Q&As #8.13)

Q4: “I’m working the second pairing of the same domicile day and we are running late! The total duty day has exceeded 12 hours. Does that mean I get the extended duty premium?”

Each duty day will be calculated independently when determining whether the extended duty day premium will be applicable. This means that you would need to have a duty day exceeding twelve (12) hours on a singular pairing, not a combination of both. (Contract Q&A #8.14)

Q5: “What happens if my first pairing runs late and I miss the check-in of my second pairing? Will the pull/reschedule have pay protections?”

If you are unable to make the second pairing due to running late on the first pairing, the pull/reschedule will not result in a loss of pay. You will be paid what you were originally scheduled to work or what you actually work, whichever is greater. (Contract Q&As #8.16)
