Phoenix E-Connection

by | Aug 10, 2023 | Base News, Phoenix

Note: The following update was emailed to Phoenix-based Flight Attendants on August 10, 2023. If you’d like to receive emails from TWU Local 556, please email communications@staging1.twu556.org.

I hope summer is going well for everyone so far and things calm down a bit as kids are going back to school.

Phoenix has a new staff in the Inflight Base. Hillary Greene is our new Inflight Supervisor, and Stacey Woltz is Base Coordinator. Stacey replaces Shelby Daley, who is now a Supervisor. Welcome to PHX, Hillary, and Stacey.

I have stocked the red rack in the lounge with several pieces of Union SWAG. Feel free to help yourself, and thank you for supporting your Union by displaying these items.

Thank you for allowing me to represent you, and if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I hope to see you at the picket this month.

You can contact me through email at jdipippa@staging1.twu556.org or call/text at (214) 640-4314.

Union Emails

I’ve heard from a few people that they no longer receive Union emails. Please check your spam or junk folder for them. If they aren’t there, I’ve included a graphic below to walk you through updating your email address. I know many people use Yahoo as an email address and have spoken with our Communications Committee, and they are reporting problems delivering emails to Yahoo accounts. They have included the following blurb below in their Communications Reports that I wanted to share with you.

“The Communications Committee continues to see instances where Members with Yahoo emails (and other sub-domains such as aol.com) are being sent to junk/spam boxes. Yahoo is having server issues, and we are working with them to resolve them. However, it appears to be intermittent with Yahoo accounts (and their applicable children companies such as AOL). If you are not receiving TWU Local 556 emails, please double-check your spam and junk folders to confirm the emails weren’t sent there. If the emails are in your spam folder, please mark them as “not spam” and also add those email addresses to your contact list as a known sender. But, in the meantime, all emails are posted to our website at staging1.twu556.org/members and can be read there until the issue is resolved.”

If you don’t want to visit the website, have a Yahoo email account, or just want to update your email address, I would recommend reviewing the graphic below.

 Info To Know

Reserve Obligation

Read Before Fly (RBF 2023-38) was released regarding Flight Attendant Reserve Obligations.

The RBF contains important information about Reserve responsibilities during their contactable time.

TWU Local 556 Members of all levels of seniority are receiving discipline up to and including termination for not being within two (2) hours driving distance on reserve. Please ensure that you are within two (2) hours driving distance of the Domicile for your Reserve obligation for the entire time you are liable for contact.

If you are not feeling well the day before a Reserve block and you are not within two (2) hours driving distance of the Domicile for your Reserve obligation, make sure that you call in sick prior to your liable for contact time. Calling in sick after being liable for contact time can trigger an investigation into your location and result in potential discipline.

Your Reserve obligation is to the Domicile for which the block is scheduled. If you pick up back-to-back Reserve blocks, from two (2) different Domiciles, you are at risk for violating this work rule. CWA/CrewView is not programmed to alert you to a specific work rule. The only alerts when processing trades or pickups are for FAR or contractual legalities. Click here for the TWU Local 556 Education Committee’s FAQ about Reserve obligations.

Electronics Use

There has been a surge in discipline being issued for using your electronic devices during the Critical Phase of Flight. These have resulted in both Class 1.14 and Class 2.7 violations.

Class violations are found in your IEFB in the Flight Attendant Work Rules and Expectations Publication (FAWRE).

Vacation Bidding – Round 2

During Round II, you will bid for one seven (7) day block. Vacation bidding will be available on your IEFB in the Vacation B&A app.

  • Round II opens: August 8, 2023
  • Round II closes: August 14, 2023
  • Round II results: August 16, 2023
  • Round II protest ends: August 18, 2023

ASAP Reporting Reminder

When in doubt, fill out an ASAP report. ASAP is the preferred reporting method endorsed by your Union. ASAP reporting may be utilized for any safety event, incident, or concern experienced while performing your duties on a specific flight. Reporting a safety concern through ASAP will ensure the event, incident, or concern is visible to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Southwest Airlines (SWA), and TWU Local 556.

You can access the ASAP reporting in two ways:

  • IEFB – ASAP icon
  • SWALife: SWALife > My Work > Inflight > Reporting > ASAP reporting for FAs
If you are unable to write a report within 24 hours – you can call the ASAP Hotline: 1-866-231-8338. Events reported on the Hotline must be followed by a formal report submission within three calendar days thereafter. Please save this number in your contacts.

Here is a list of topics to report through ASAP (this list is a cross-section of possible reporting topics and is not meant to be exhaustive):

  • Boarding before the flight crew is ready or in position.
  • Safety concerns with Ground Operations during boarding, deplaning, and/or ground delays, including door opening, closing, and cracking procedures.
  • Safety concerns regarding Inflight service on short flights.
  • Turbulence and related safety of flight serving concerns.
  • Inadvertently flying without your IEFB in your possession as a working Crew Member.
  • A non-operative Bin Assist Mechanism (BAM), would be a mechanical item and would need to be reported to the captain first to place in the logbook for
  • Tech Ops to address in addition to the ASAP report.
  • Slide/Door concerns, including full or partial Inadvertent Slide Deployment (ISD).
  • Minimum Crew violation concerns.

Hot Aircraft Reporting

Last month a Hot Aircraft reminder was sent out. Since this summer is coming in with a vengeance, it seems appropriate to mention it again. These tips for hot aircraft events can help:

  • Make the summer procedures PA
  • Open air vents and lower window shades
  • Check for the probe in the aircraft while on the ground
  • Notify the Captain when the aircraft is too hot
  • Fill out the form on your IEFB and report the incident

Below is an example of the form you will find on your company iPad
