Q1: “When is Open Time?”
Open Time begins on the 20th of the month prior at 2200 Local Base Time.
Q2: “Can I trade my OAK pairing for a pairing in LAS Open Time?”
No. We cannot utilize Open Time to trade pairings which originate in different domiciles. If you want to trade your OAK pairing for a LAS assignment, you’ll need to use TT/GA and trade with another Flight Attendant.
Q3: “I like to pick up back-to-back assignments (both Reserve blocks and pairings) and can never remember the required domicile break. Can we review domicile break duration requirements, please?”
Sure! With the introduction of the FAA 10-Hour Rest Rule in 2022, the requirements for mandatory rest have changed a touch. This is because there is no longer such a thing as “reduced rest.” The FAA mandates that we receive no less than ten (10) hours of rest (end of debrief/release from APSB to check-in), and this amount cannot be reduced by the Flight Attendant or Crew Scheduling. When you are arranging your schedule in advance, you must allow for at least eleven (11) hours of rest between the two assignments (from end of debrief/release from APSB to check-in). If the first assignment is a Reserve block, the calculation will use the release time of the reserve block in CWA, which is the last scheduled arrival on that domicile day that you would be legal to work (dependent on your Reserve type). If you have completed one assignment and are in your rest period, you can reduce your scheduled domicile break to the FAR minimum of ten (10) hours.
Q4: “I have an ORR block beginning on 12/31/24. Am I legal to pick up a VJA trip on 1/1/25?”
As long as you have legal rest you will be able to pick up a VJA trip on 1/1/25. However, If you are given an assignment on Reserve that overlaps your VJA trip, or reduces your domicile break before the trip below the 10-hour FAR requirement, your VJA trip will be pulled without pay. Scheduling can go out of order during overlap to avoid pulling trips, but having a trip is not a guarantee that you will not get used.
Q5: “How do I know if I am legal for a trade or pick-up?”
When on the Trip Trade/Give Away screen, ensure you are highlighting the pairing(s) involved in the pick-up or trade, and then click the check mark in the blue bar. Any legalities affecting the transaction will be displayed in the pop-up window. If you are legal, you will be able to process the pick-up or trade.
